Is This Shop Real? Assessing a Website Before Paying

Check a suspicious online store without placing an order, uploading personal data or making accusations the evidence cannot support.

Illustrative scenario: an advert leads to a store offering an expensive camera at a fraction of its usual price. You want to decide whether to buy, not identify or confront whoever runs the site. Begin with the exact URL and the advertised offer. Do not enter payment details, download unknown files or create an account simply to investigate.

Check the address and the claimed business

Read the hostname carefully for brand misspellings and misleading subdomains. Use registration lookup data to compare the domain's age with claims such as 'trading since 2008.' A recent registration is a question to ask, not a verdict: established businesses can launch new domains. Privacy-protected registration is common and does not itself indicate deception. A padlock means the connection is encrypted; it does not certify the seller.

Look for independent evidence

  • Search the exact store name and hostname with terms such as refund, complaint and delivery. Read the dates and underlying experiences rather than relying on a star rating.
  • Check the claimed company number in its official registry. Compare the legal entity with the terms, returns policy and invoice information.
  • Reverse-search a distinctive product photo. A reused manufacturer image is normal; an unrelated shop's branded photograph deserves clarification.
  • Compare archived versions of the website. Note changes in products, business name and contact details without assuming why they changed.

Use reputation services with care

A URL reputation result may identify known malicious content, but a clean result can simply mean the service has not seen the site before. Query only a public hostname or public URL. Do not submit password-reset links, private shopping sessions or URLs containing personal information; some services share submissions or analysis results.

Choose a proportionate outcome

Record specific observations: the returns address is absent, the claimed registration cannot be matched, or the offer has no independent delivery history. If the uncertainty is too high, do not buy. If you already paid, preserve receipts and contact your payment provider through its official channel. Report suspected fraud to the appropriate authority or platform without publishing personal information or declaring criminal intent based only on warning signs.
